What's Your Coaching Story?  Meet Alison Brunsdon | ICF Cleveland

What has been your career path?

I started my career in Rolls Royce in in the UK and worked in Personnel. I worked in a number of HR roles in the National Health Service and retail in the UK before joining Lubrizol in 2002.

As the Director of HR for EMEA, I directed leadership and org development; then came to the US to build a global talent function. Here, I introduced leadership and coaching development, , talent processes and culture change. I trained on psychometric assessment an am certified in multiple.

How did you become involved in coaching?

In 1998, the retail organization Boots decided to introduce a coaching culture to all 45,000 employees. We trained all of the senior HR leaders and then business leaders in coaching (Whitmore Group GROW Model). At Boots, we showed a reduction in theft, increase in employee engagement , higher customer satisfaction and sales in the stores where we trained leaders in coaching compared to the control stores who were not yet trained. It was  great to show the value of coaching in tangible ways. In 2004, I undertook the CIPD Coaching Certification and continued by coaching leaders in Lubrizol as well as ensuring that coaching was part of our leadership development.

What do you recommend for other coaches pursuing this path?

If you are in an organization in an HR role or talent role, clearly signal your coaching approach at times. Setting boundaries and providing role clarity is key.

What do you appreciate most about our ICF CLE chapter?

The expertise is amazing. Everyone is so generous with knowledge and time.

What’s next?

I have set up my own coaching business , Hartington Consulting and just started a role as Director of Coaching and Assessment Services with ERC, an HR Professional Services company based on a membership model. I will be an interface with our members to help them assess their company needs that range from assessments and coaching to training and consulting.

I am also working toward the ICF ACC coaching credential through the Coach Net Program.

A fun fact?

I have travelled more of the US than many of my US friends! It is great to combine all my interests of food, wine and travel!
